Las Vegas, NV - Pedestrian in Critical Condition, Dog Killed in Crash on N. Buffalo Drive

Las Vegas, NV (Oct.11, 2026) – A pedestrian is in critical condition, and a dog is dead after a crash on the night of October 11 on N. Buffalo Drive near Cobal Canyon Lane, north of Craig Road, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD).

The collision happened around 6:47 p.m., police said in a statement. A 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV was heading south on Buffalo when it crashed into a man crossing the street while walking a dog. Police say he was outside a marked or implied crosswalk.

Medical personnel transported the man to UMC, where staff members determined his injuries were life-threatening. The dog was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Hyundai stayed at the scene and did not show any signs of impairment, according to LVMPD.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Las Vegas

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reported 109 pedestrian fatalities in Nevada in 2023. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office reported 113 for 2024. These steps protect an injured pedestrian’s health and their claim:

  • Ask LVMPD for the crash report number, because every insurance and legal step starts with that report.
  • Photograph the scene, the lighting, and any vehicle damage, since conditions change within days.
  • Note nearby stores, homes, and buses with cameras, because footage is overwritten quickly.
  • Keep the clothing, shoes, leash, and phone in their current condition as evidence.
  • Save every hospital bill, missed-work record, and veterinary or animal-control record for the dog.
  • Send insurance calls to one family member, and decline a recorded statement to the driver’s insurer.

Pedestrians Outside a Crosswalk and Fault Under Nevada Law

A police note that a pedestrian was outside a crosswalk does not end a claim in Nevada. The state follows modified comparative negligence, so an injured person can recover while less than 51% at fault (NRS 41.141). Fault is divided by percentage, and a person’s share reduces the recovery.

Drivers owe pedestrians a duty of care on every road, marked crosswalk or not. Investigators examine speed, lookout, lighting, and driver attention. A finding of no impairment does not decide fault, because a sober driver can still be negligent.

  • Who may be liable: the driver, and any other party whose conduct the investigation shows contributed to the crash.
  • Evidence that decides fault: the crash report, vehicle data, camera footage, and witness accounts.
  • Coverage that may apply: the driver’s liability policy and the injured person’s own uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.
  • Deadline: Nevada gives two years from the crash to file a personal injury claim (NRS 11.190), which puts the deadline at October 11, 2028.
