Las Vegas, NV (July 22, 2026) – A 36-year-old woman from Duarte, California, died early Wednesday after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of South Sammy Davis Jr. Drive and Resorts World Avenue, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
The collision occurred at approximately 3:17 a.m. on July 22, 2026. Evidence at the scene and surveillance video indicated the woman was crossing diagonally through the intersection, from the southwest corner to the northeast corner, against the pedestrian traffic control signal and outside a marked or implied crosswalk.
A 2025 Toyota Prius was traveling northbound on South Sammy Davis Jr. Drive in the right lane of three, approaching a steady green signal at Resorts World Avenue. The pedestrian crossed the vehicle’s path of travel while slipping and falling to the ground. The front right portion of the Prius struck her.
Medical personnel transported the woman to the UMC Trauma Center with life-threatening injuries. Despite life-saving measures, she was pronounced deceased by hospital staff.
The driver of the Prius was detained on suspicion of impairment, but has since been released, according to police.
The woman’s death marked the 66th traffic-related fatality in LVMPD’s jurisdiction for 2026. The collision remains under investigation by LVMPD’s Collision Investigation Section.
A death like this leaves a family with more questions than answers, most of them about what actually happened in those few seconds at 3 a.m. What the investigation ultimately finds does not have to be the last word on what the family is owed.
Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Las Vegas, Nevada
A pedestrian crossing outside a marked crosswalk or against a signal does not automatically end a wrongful death claim. Nevada follows a modified comparative negligence standard (NRS 41.141), meaning a family can still recover compensation provided their loved one was less than 51% at fault. Fault in a case like this depends on facts the investigation has not yet resolved, including vehicle speed, signal timing, lighting conditions, and what the driver could reasonably see at 3 a.m.
Can the family pursue a claim before the criminal process ends?
Yes. A civil wrongful death claim proceeds separately from any criminal investigation or charges. Families are not required to wait for the Collision Investigation Section to close its file before consulting an attorney.
What can a wrongful death claim cover?
Nevada wrongful death claims can address funeral and burial costs, medical expenses incurred before death, lost future financial support, and the loss of the relationship itself. Every family’s damages are calculated individually.
What does the investigation status mean for the family?
The driver’s release from detention is not a final determination of fault or innocence. It reflects the status of a criminal inquiry, not the outcome of a civil claim, which examines a different standard of evidence.
What is the filing deadline?
Wrongful death claims must be filed within two years of the date of death (NRS 41.085). This death occurred on July 22, 2026. The filing deadline is July 22, 2028. Surveillance footage and physical evidence from the intersection will not last that long.
How Ace Law Group Handles Fatal Pedestrian Cases
Ace Law Group treats every wrongful death case as a family in crisis, not a police report. For a pedestrian fatality with disputed circumstances like this one, insurance companies move fast to point at the victim’s actions before an attorney can establish what actually happened. Our pedestrian accident attorneys in Las Vegas secure the surveillance footage, the LVMPD Collision Investigation Section report, and the intersection’s signal timing data before any of it is lost or overwritten.
A former Nevada judge, Hon. Christopher K. Lee (Ret.), reviews these cases directly, bringing 12 years of judicial experience to how the firm evaluates comparative fault. In Nevada, a pedestrian crossing outside a crosswalk or against a signal does not end a family’s claim. It only reduces the recovery by the pedestrian’s percentage of fault, and that percentage has to be proven with evidence, not assumed by an insurance adjuster.
We handle wrongful death cases on a contingency fee basis: no upfront costs, no fees unless we win.
No family should have to face an insurance company alone while grieving, especially one already being told their loved one was at fault.
