Las Vegas, NV - Pedestrian Killed in DUI Crash on West Tropicana Avenue Near Edmond Street

Las Vegas, NV (August 29, 2026) – A pedestrian died early Saturday morning after a driver later arrested on DUI-related charges struck him on West Tropicana Avenue, west of South Edmond Street near Decatur Boulevard.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded around 2:19 a.m. Police say the man was crossing Tropicana northbound, outside a marked or implied crosswalk, when he entered the path of a 2013 Nissan Juke traveling eastbound.

The Nissan’s front end struck the pedestrian, throwing him onto the roadway, and emergency personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

The driver, identified as 26-year-old Michyl Rodriguez-Quijano, brought the vehicle to a stop and remained at the scene, but officers noted signs of impairment.

He was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on DUI-related charges. His death marked the 81st traffic-related fatality in LVMPD’s jurisdiction this year.

LVMPD’s Collision Investigation Section is investigating, and Tropicana remains closed at the location.

DUI Accidents in Las Vegas, NV

A DUI arrest carries its own criminal penalty separate from the family’s civil right to recover, and the pedestrian’s family can pursue both without either one waiting on the other. Nevada charges DUI causing death as a category B felony under NRS 484C.430, carrying 2 to 20 years in prison, a track that runs through the criminal courts independent of the family’s civil wrongful death claim under NRS 41.085.

Crossing outside a crosswalk shifts an initial burden onto a pedestrian under Nevada law, but a driver’s impairment cuts hard against them in how a jury divides fault: an impaired driver has a diminished ability to see and react to exactly the kind of hazard a sober driver is expected to avoid, and that failure typically outweighs an ordinary pedestrian misstep once a jury starts assigning percentages.

A DUI arrest is not proof of civil fault by itself, but it is the kind of fact that moves the needle.
