Las Vegas, NV – Hit-and-Run Driver Kills Pedestrian Near Nellis Boulevard and Twain Avenue

Hit-and-Run Crash on South Nellis Boulevard

Las Vegas, NV (August 23, 2026) – A 36-year-old woman died after a hit-and-run driver struck her while she crossed South Nellis Boulevard near East Twain Avenue Sunday night, Aug. 23.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded around 9:15 p.m. Officers say she was crossing Nellis in or next to the marked crosswalk when a silver 2005 Toyota Matrix, traveling south in the center travel lane, struck her and threw her onto the roadway.

The driver did not stop to render aid and fled south. Medical personnel took the woman to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center’s Trauma Center with life-threatening injuries, and she died from them the following day.

Her death marked the 80th traffic-related fatality in LVMPD’s jurisdiction this year. Detectives have since located and impounded the vehicle, which shows front-end and windshield damage consistent with the crash, but the driver remains outstanding.

LVMPD’s Collision Investigation Section is investigating.

Nevada Wrongful Death Claims in Hit and Run Accidents

Nevada law puts the burden squarely on the driver in a marked crosswalk, and a wrongful death claim under NRS 41.085 does not require the driver to be found first. Under NRS 484B.283, a driver must yield to a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk, and Metro’s own account already places the woman there or next to it, which is about as strong a starting position as a pedestrian case gets in Nevada. NRS 41.130, Nevada’s general personal injury liability statute, holds the driver responsible for the crash regardless of whether police make an identification, and the family’s right to pursue a wrongful death claim exists the moment the crash happened, not the moment an arrest does.

Locating the car is a meaningful head start: registration records typically lead investigators to an owner even before they confirm who was driving, and that same information can support a civil claim once identified. Nevada’s uninsured motorist coverage exists for exactly this scenario too, paying out through the victim’s own policy when the at-fault driver is never identified or cannot be held responsible directly. A hit-and-run wrongful death case moves on two tracks at once: the criminal search for the driver, and the civil work of preserving evidence and pursuing recovery, which does not have to wait for the first one to finish.

Ace Law Group pursues wrongful death claims from a hit-and-run the same day police open the file, without waiting for an arrest.
