Gardnerville, NV - Donald Johnson, 60, and Shelly Johnson, 50, Killed When Motorcycle Struck by Vehicle Fleeing Deputies

Gardnerville, NV (Sept. 19, 2026) – Two Gardnerville residents were killed after the motorcycle they were riding was struck head-on by a vehicle fleeing Douglas County deputies, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

60-year-old Donald Johnson and 50-year-old Shelly Johnson died at the scene on Kimmerling Road at Country Lane, in the Gardnerville Ranchos, on the afternoon of September 19, 2026.

Deputies responding to a domestic disturbance call spotted a vehicle driven by 30-year-old Reno resident Gerardo Adame-Lopez speeding near Tillman and Kimmerling, according to the Sheriff’s Office. “Deputies attempted to catch up to the vehicle and conduct a traffic stop,” Undersheriff Ron Elges said. “The subject failed to stop and continued fleeing from deputies at a high rate of speed.”

Adame-Lopez’s vehicle attempted to pass another vehicle on Kimmerling Road at Country Lane and collided head-on with the Johnsons’ motorcycle, the Sheriff’s Office said. After the crash, the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree on the eastbound side of Kimmerling Road.

Adame-Lopez sustained severe injuries and was flown by air ambulance to Renown Regional Medical Center for treatment. The crash was reported at 3:55 p.m., according to the Pulse Point app, and closed Kimmerling Road east and west of Country Lane for nearly six hours before it reopened Sunday morning.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office, Nevada State Police, and Lyon County Sheriff’s Office are investigating. The Sheriff’s Office said Adame-Lopez will likely face felony charges in connection with the collision.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Fatal Motorcycle Accidents in Gardnerville, NV

A driver who flees from law enforcement and causes a fatal crash can be held liable in a civil wrongful death claim, separate from any criminal case the state pursues.

  • Establish liability: review deputy dash-camera and body-camera footage, 911 dispatch recordings, and the pursuing vehicle’s data recorder
  • Preserve evidence: request that law enforcement retain pursuit records, 911 calls, and scene photographs before standard retention schedules erase them
  • Review pursuit policy: determine whether the responding agency’s vehicle pursuit policy was followed
  • Pursue damages: funeral and burial costs, lost financial support, and loss of companionship for surviving family members

Nevada follows a modified comparative negligence standard (NRS 41.141), meaning a surviving family can still recover damages provided their loved one was less than 51% at fault. Nothing in the reported facts suggests the Johnsons contributed to this crash.

Under Nevada law, wrongful death claims must be filed within two years of the date of death (NRS 41.085), for this crash, by September 19, 2028.
