Carson City, NV – Bicyclist Dies After DUI Crash on US 50 Ramp to I-580

DUI Crash on US 50 Ramp to I-580

Carson City, NV (August 25, 2026) – A bicyclist died after a driver later arrested on suspicion of DUI struck her on the US 50 westbound on-ramp to Interstate 580 southbound Tuesday night, Aug. 25.

Nevada Highway Patrol troopers responded around 10:21 p.m. to a black Chevrolet SUV that had struck an adult female bicyclist. Ground ambulance crews took her to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The SUV driver, an adult female, reported no injuries at the scene. Troopers investigated her for impairment and arrested her on suspicion of DUI. The bicyclist died from her injuries at 10:18 a.m. Wednesday.

Nevada Highway Patrol has not released her identity pending notification of next of kin. Intermittent closures of US 50 and the I-580 southbound on-ramp were needed while investigators worked the scene.

Nevada allows uncapped punitive damages in DUI crashes under NRS 42.010, removing the caps that apply to most other personal injury cases. The bicyclist’s spouse, children, or parents can pursue a wrongful death claim under NRS 41.085 for the financial support, companionship, and comfort the family lost, plus medical and funeral costs. Because the driver was arrested for DUI rather than merely found at fault, the family can also seek punitive damages meant to punish the conduct, not just compensate the loss, with no dollar cap tied to the compensatory award.

A DUI arrest does not resolve the civil claim on its own, and the criminal case moves on a separate timeline from a wrongful death case. Evidence like the toxicology results, the SUV’s black box data, and witness statements are strongest in the days immediately following a crash like this one.
