Nevada Equal Rights Commission

Las Vegas and Northern Nevada have Equal Rights Commissions in charge of dealing with various types of employment discrimination throughout Nevada.

Individuals with disabilities are assured protection from being discriminated against during the hiring and firing processes, with their compensation and benefits, when promotions or demotions are rendered, and when they receive training and job duties.

A person is considered disabled if:

  • They have at least one considerably limiting physical or mental impairment
  • Those around them deem the impairment to exist
  • They have verifiable documentation of their impairment

Individuals classified as disabled can still accomplish fundamental functions at their place of employment. They may need reasonable accommodations to perform, including accessible facilities, modified furniture or equipment, modified policies, revamped job duties, or accommodating schedules. These accommodations are considered reasonable if they do not place an unnecessary burden on the employer.

Employment laws that protect against age discrimination apply to people over 40 years. These protections pertain to the hiring and firing processes, to demotions or promotions, to assigning job duties and providing applicable training, and to compensation packages.

Employment laws are comprised of more than just male or female identification. They also include an individual’s sexual orientation and their gender identity. How an individual expresses their sexuality through their behavior, mannerisms, or they way they dress is also protected.

Discriminating against a female because she is pregnant, has given birth to a baby, or for any medical conditions related to pregnancy or maternity is against the law.

Harassing another employee and creating a hostile or distressing work environment is considered sexual harassment.

Discriminating against an employee because of their religion, national origin, or race is prohibited. Employers are prohibited from discriminating based on an employee’s ancestry, culture, or place of birth. With regard to race, these laws cover not only skin color but also prominent facial features and hair composition. Religious beliefs and practices receive protection under these laws as well.
