The Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1970 was enacted to prevent serious injury and death in the workplace. This Act helped create the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which outlines standards and employee rights to help protect workers and keep them safe. They are also in charge of enforcing the standards they set.
Understanding workplace rights
OSHA has set guidelines on what is acceptable in order to keep employees safe from serious injury or death. The following are examples of safety standards that employers must follows per the Occupational Safety and Health Administration:
- Set limits on employee exposure to hazardous chemicals
- Require employers to actively monitor possible hazards at work
- Require employers to keep detailed records of any job-related illness or injury
Additional employee rights that help keep the workplace safe from injury, illness, and death include requiring employers to adhere to the following:
- Prevent certain infectious illnesses and diseases
- Provide protection from falls
- Ensure machines have guards
- Prevent employees from being exposed to substances such as asbestos that could harm them
- Ensure trenches are safe and will not cave in
- Ensure that confined spaces are safely entered by workers
- Provide adequate training for certain jobs that are considered dangerous
- Provide safety equipment such as respirators
Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Legislation
Chapter 618 of the Nevada Revised Statutes defines Nevada’s Occupational Safety and Health codes that were enacted to provide employee rights and help avoid accidents and injuries in the workplace.

Reporting a workplace accident or fatality
Any accident that involves the hospitalization of at least three employees, or a fatality, must be reported to the Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration Office no later than eight hours following the time the employer learned of the accident.
